LTC Range Instruction & Proficiency
Texas LTC Range Instruction & Handgun Proficiency
This portion of the Texas License to Carry (LTC) course fulfills the required range instruction (typically 1–2 hours) and live-fire proficiency demonstration with a qualified Texas LTC instructor. It covers safe handgun handling, range safety, and the official DPS course of fire so you can demonstrate the minimum proficiency needed to complete your training certificate.
Course of Fire & Passing Requirements
You will fire a total of 50 rounds on a standard B-27 silhouette target from three distances:
• 3 yards — 20 rounds (timed strings)
• 7 yards — 20 rounds (timed strings)
• 15 yards — 10 rounds (timed strings)
Scoring is based on hit location (higher points for center hits). A minimum score of 175 out of 250 points (70%) is required to pass. Safe gun handling is also evaluated throughout. Red-dot or green-dot optics (non-magnified, non-projecting) are generally allowed; lasers and magnified optics are not.
What Students Need to Bring
• Valid government-issued photo ID (must match any prior training paperwork)
• Printed training certificate from the classroom/online portion (LTC-100, LTC-101, or LTC-104 as applicable)
• A safe, functional handgun of at least .22 caliber (semi-auto or revolver that you are familiar with; instructor will inspect it)
• At least 50 rounds of appropriate factory ammunition (extra recommended for malfunctions, warm-up, or a possible reshoot)
• Eye protection and hearing protection (over-ear muffs or plugs)
• Closed-toe shoes and range-appropriate clothing (high-collar/crew-neck shirt recommended to avoid hot brass; no low-cut or V-neck tops)
• Optional but helpful: baseball-style cap (brim forward), extra magazine(s) or speedloaders, water
Notes: Confirm any range-specific rules (ammo type, rentals, etc.) with your instructor beforehand. Students under 21 may need to bring their own firearm and ammunition due to federal restrictions on rentals/sales. This is a proficiency demonstration—not a beginner shooting lesson—so you should already know how to safely load, unload, and operate your handgun.
Upon successful completion, your instructor will sign off on the required training certificate so you can proceed with your DPS LTC application.
